Nigel De Jong from the LA Galaxy is now the talk of the town and not in a good way. De Jong made a nasty tackle against Portland’s Darlington Nagbe on Sunday that has Nagbe out with a left ankle sprain. The controversy surrounding the play is that De Jong wasn’t awarded a red card during the match. This comes as a surprise because the referees having been card happy with many teams at the start of the season.
"No one wants to see anything like that," RSL coach Jeff Cassar said. "I don't think there was an intent to break somebody's leg, but those things can happen when you do those kinds of tackles. What I did see was De Jong go up to Darlington after the game and speak to him and I thought that was really nice."
Even though De Jong went up to Darlington, that still wasn’t enough to end the situation. The MLS Disciplinary Committee has the option to give De Jong a retroactive red and will soon decide how long his suspension will be.
