Utah Royals FC Not Slowing Down Despite Herriman Snow

Thanks to the new world-class Zions Bank Real Academy Training center in Herriman, the Utah Royals FC haven't missed a beat —regardless of the towering snow drifts outside.

Thursday marked day three of the Utah Royals FC preseason calendar, and was characterized by intense drills and fast-paced movement. As players continue to mesh with their new teammates and staff, the group worked on improving their chemistry.

“Today’s practice was good,” said Utah Royals FC forward Amy Rodriguez. “Right now it’s all about the team and getting on the same page, and I can see that coming together for the squad. We have a great staff and a great group of players, so if we can just keep building that chemistry, I think we are going to have a good season.”

Said MF Mandy Laddish of today’s practice: “Practice today focused a lot on defensive tactics. There are a lot of new faces, so it’s important that we all become comfortable and familiar with each other’s movements. Laura spent a lot of the day coaching smart, simple, and efficient movement — that will enable us to stay connected in the midfield during transition.”

After Wednesday’s day of rest, the team worked on their fitness and focused on drills and training that required a lot of running and explosiveness.

“We need to take care of our bodies,” said Rodriguez. “You don’t train every single day, otherwise you’re going to get tired. For us, recovery days are really important. Not necessarily is it a day off, but it’s a day to take care of our sore muscles, to recuperate and get ready for the next training session.”

But there is more to the season preparation than soccer practice. When the women aren’t out on the pitch, they are heavily involved in team film sessions, weightlifting, meetings, and tactical discussions. The group also spends a majority of the day together, meeting with coaches, front office staff and connecting with new teammates. They also rehab in a state-of-the-art training room and eat nutritionally-designed meals provided at the Zions Bank Training Center cafeteria.
