HERRIMAN, Utah (Wednesday, August 4, 2021) – Real Monarchs (3-10-4, 13 points) fell 3-0 to Rio Grande Valley FC at Zions Bank Stadium. Goals from Edvin Quero, John Sanchez and Christian Sorto earned Rio Grande Valley FC the full three points.
The Monarchs started the first half on the front foot, applying constant pressure in the away side’s half of the pitch. After several stops by the Toros defense, Rio Grande Valley FC settled the match and found the breakthrough in the 19th minute. Midfielder James Murphy found Quero in space, who then rocketed a shot from distance to give the Toros the opening lead. Later in the half, Aris Briggs pushed a back-heel pass into the path of Bode Davis, but his shot was saved by the goalkeeper and the half ended 1-0 in favor of the visitors.
The second half began with more attacking pressure from the Monarchs. In the 50th minute, Daniel Flores battled for a loose ball in the box before finding himself one on one with the goalkeeper, but his shot was parried out for a throw-in. Four minutes later, Rio Grande Valley doubled the lead on a shot inside the box from Sanchez. In the 77th minute, Ibrahim Bancé received his second yellow, forcing the Monarchs down to 10-men the rest of the way. Six minutes later, the Toros scored their third goal on a close shot from Sorto and the match ended in favor of Rio Grande Valley.
