Stories to Watch:

The First of Many

Last week Real Salt Lake earned its first clean sheet of the season. Goalkeeper David Ochoa earned the first shutout of his Major League Soccer career, becoming the fourth youngest player in league history to do so. The starting backline and goalkeeper, made up of five Homegrown players, including Ochoa, Andrew Brody, Justen Glad, Erik Holt and Donny Toia had an average of 24.4 years old.

Time for Victory

FC Dallas enters the match after falling 1-0 at Minnesota United, RSL’s first opponent of the season whom they defeated 2-1 at Allianz Field. Both sides have not won a match since May 1 when RSL defeated Sporting Kansas City 3-1 and Dallas earned a 4-1 win over Portland Timbers, since then each team has recorded a loss and a draw.

Connections: FC Dallas Head Coach Luchi Gonzalez has a very similar coaching career path as Real Salt Lake Head Coach Freddy Juarez. Both coaches got their start within their respective club’s academies, working their way up to lead the first team. Ironically, both coaches have some of the highest number of Homegrowns on their roster, many of whom they coached during their times at the academy level.

As players, Gonzalez and Juarez both played for the Minnesota Thunder, just one year apart from each other.
