Real Monarchs SLC Hosts Orange County SC Saturday in USL Championship Playoffs Quarterfinal

HERRIMAN, Utah (Friday, October 25, 2019) â€“ Real Monarchs SLC will kick off its quest for the USL Championship Cup against Orange County SC on Saturday, October 26that Zions Bank Stadium. The afternoon kickoff from Herriman is set for 1:00 p.m. MT.

Real Monarchs secured the right to host Saturday’s quarterfinal clash with its 3-0 victory over Sacramento Republic FC last Saturday. DF Kalen Ryden broke the first half deadlock before the break with a headed goal. MF Luke Mulholland tallied his first goal of the season for the Monarchs with an excellent finish before FW Douglas Martínez furthered his team-leading goal count with his 16th of the season to finish off the game. GK David Ochoa held fast in goal making three saves and securing his fourth clean sheet – the eighth in 2019 for Real Monarchs – to secure the needed three points to host in the playoffs.
The Monarchs will now welcome Orange County SC, who finished 5th in the Western Conference with a record of 15-10-9 (54 points). The two teams last met in early October in the regular-season at Zions Bank Stadium in a contest that saw the Monarchs walk away victors with a 2-0 clean sheet.

At the end of the 2019 regular season, Real Monarchs SLC saw 22 players tally a goal in a Monarchs jersey. The attacking front is led by Honduran International FW Douglas Martinez, who earned the club’s Golden Boot with recorded 16 goals as well as 6 assists across 22 appearances. Meanwhile, MF Maikel Chang and team captain Jack Blake continue to provide a meaningful presence in the midfield providing a combined 21 goals and 7 assists as of October 19.

In front goal, USL Veteran DF Noah Powder has made himself a mainstay on the backline with 29 starts and 30 appearances during the regular season. Pairedwith fellow defenders, Kalen Ryden, Jordan Pena, Konrad Plewa, and Erik Holt the Monarchs backline stood firm to help push the team to its third top-four finish in as many years to make its third consecutive playoff appearance.

In goal, GK Andrew Putna and GK David Ochoa combined for a goals against average of 1.45 sharing 2,610 minutes. The two each earned four clean sheets to record eight total throughout the 2019 regular season. Putna finished off his season making an appearance on the USL Championship Week 32 Team of the Week, having made 32 saves in 15 appearances. Ochoa made 54 saves in 16 appearances and featured for the USMNT U-20 team. Ochoa returned to Utah after featuring in two matches of the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup where he tallied one shutout and was named to the 2019 MLS Homegrown Game roster.
