The Royal Mates experienced another week in Australia's W-League. Here is an update from down under.
Western Sydney Wanderers
In the second week of the W-League, Lo’eau LaBonta played the full 90 minutes as well as teammate, Sydney Miramontez against Brisbane Roar. The Wanderers created many opportunities on goal, but fell short 1-0.
Melbourne Victory and Newcastle Jets
Samantha Johnson started for Melbourne Victory against teammate Katie Stengel who started for the Newcastle Jets. Melbourne Victory took advantage of the Jets early and scored two goals in the first 11 minutes. After Melbourne’s second goal, Stengel replied with an assist to Jets teammate Courtnee Vine for the finish. Before the break, Johnson set up a chance to score off a corner kick, but her header was placed right in the hands of Melbourne Victory’s goalkeeper. The Jets continued the chase for another goal, but fell 2-1.
Stengel and the New Castle Jets will take on Canberra United on Saturday. The last time Stengel faced Canberra United she tallied a hat-trick last season. Now, she will be tested as teammate Rachel Corsie joins the back line for Canberra United.
In the second round of the W-League, Rachel Corsie started and played the full 90 minutes for Canberra United. A back-and-forth game ended in a 4-4 draw against Perth Glory. Corsie was then called up to Scotland’s national team for match against the U.S. national team on Tuesday night.
