2018 US Open Cup: RSL vs SKC

SANDY, Utah (Tuesday, June 5, 2018) – Real Salt Lake (7-6-1, 22 pts, 3rd West) concludes its three-game homestand Wednesday night with an 8:00 p.m. MT kickoff against bitter longtime Western Conference rival Sporting Kansas City in the Fourth Round of the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The midweek matchup at Rio Tinto Stadium allows RSL the opportunity to extend its club-record six-game home winning streak after Saturday’s dominant 2-0 victory over visiting Seattle.

On Saturday, RSL rookie Corey Baird scored his club-high 4th goal of the season in the 56th minute to lead the Claret-and-Cobalt to a 2-0 victory over Seattle, his eventual game-winner set up on the saved rebound of a shot by DF Danny Acosta. The game’s final margin was determined in stoppage time when FW Luis Silva’s 40-yard curler found an empty net, his second goal of the week.

RSL is 8-3-3 across all competitions at home against Kansas City, the club that has defeated the Utah side in both MLS Cup 2013 and the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Semifinals. This will be the third meeting between the rivals in the Open Cup, as RSL won 2-1 at Rice-Eccles Stadium in a 2007 MLS “play-in” game. Real Salt Lake saw its deepest runs in the Open Cup when the club reached the tournament final in 2013 and the semifinal in 2015, but has yet to lift the trophy.  Including MLS “qualifiers” or “play-in” games from 2007-10, RSL’s all-time record in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup contests is 11-12-3.

At the world-class Utah venue affectionately known as “The RioT,” RSL has enjoyed a prominent home-field advantage since building its permanent home in Sandy, boasting a dominant 113-27-44 mark in the world-class venue since opening in October, 2008.
