Manchester United, Premier League and Trinidad and Tobago International Dwight Yorke spoke to fans of the 100 Lions Club prior to the match between RSL and Manchester United as part of United’s 2017 Unmissable Tour.
Fans had the chance to speak to a legend of the game prior to the match in an effort to expose the high level of soccer played overseas to fans of the league and fans of RSL. Yorke fielded questions from fans of both Manchester United and Real Salt Lake and spoke highly of RSL as a club and Utah as a whole.
“Since we just arrived the people have been great and the hospitality has been first class,” Yorke said. “So far we’ve been very fond of Utah and the people here.”
When asked about the growth of Major League Soccer and Real Salt Lake as a club Yorke spoke highly of the league and the club. As someone whose experience and high level support of the game his opinion was received well by fans in The 100 Lions Club.
“If you look at other leagues such as the Bundesliga La Liga and the Premier League there is still some catching up to do,” he said. “But I do believe the American MLS is growing and it’s growing fast and with time there is no doubt that the MLS will be able to compete.”
Yorke, a native of Trinidad and Tobago, helped lead Manchester United to the coveted treble as they won the English Premier League Crown, FA and UEFA Champions League in 1999. During his time with United Yorke tallied 65 goals in 147 appearances for the Red Devils. During his illustrious career Yorke also played for the likes of Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers and Birmingham City during his time in the BPL.
Yorke now speaks on behalf of Manchester United and is an ambassador for the team worldwide, travelling with the team and opening new doors for fans of the club around the world.
