Rio Tinto Stadium to Host Club America in Preseason Friendly

SANDY, Utah (Monday, June 12, 2017) – Rio Tinto Stadium will host Mexican powerhouse Club América on Tuesday, July 11 in an international soccer exhibition, as Liga MX standout Monarcas Morelia faces off with Club América at the world-class venue in a 7:30 p.m. MT kickoff. Coached by legendary Mexican boss Miguel “El Piojo” Herrera and boasting a roster that includes Captain and Mexican international Oribe Peralta as well as exciting Colombian FW Darwin Quintero.

For nearly 24 hours beginning tomorrow, Tuesday, June 13 at 11:00 a.m. MT, Real Salt Lake and Real Monarchs season ticket members will have the first opportunity to secure seats, with preferred prices varying by location (pricing map attached) and ranging from $20 (for kids aged 12 and under) up to $150.  The general public sale is slated for Wednesday, June 15 at 10:00 a.m. MT via the stadium box office, www.RioTintoStadium.com or www.RSL.com.

The July 11 match at Rio Tinto Stadium marks the third and final game of this summer’s “Tour Águila” for Club América, which also sees Mexico’s most popular and successful club visit Philadelphia and Denver prior to the Utah arrival. This year’s friendly at Rio Tinto Stadium will reward Utah’s strong Club América fan base with a pre-game “Fan Fest” in the club’s “Carnival Real” area on the State Street / East Side of the Stadium, kicking off at 3:30 p.m. MT. Live music, Club América trophies, the Águila mascot and legendary club player personalities are expected to be among the festivities.

Las Águilas – now celebrating their 101st year as a club – played at Rio Tinto Stadium back in 2009, on the exact same date against Real Salt Lake. RSL won that friendly match, 1-0, as a goal by Javier Morales and a clean sheet by Chris Seitz distinguished that game, which also featured current players Tony Beltran, Chris Wingert, David Horst and Yura Movsisyan, as well as current Real Monarchs assistant coach Jamison Olave.

Morelia has also appeared on Utah soil in its past against Real Salt Lake, winning 3-1 in a friendly at Rice-Eccles Stadium at the University of Utah on July 19, 2006.
