Dallas Adds Urruti in Re-Entry Draft

Maximiliano Urruti

Stage One of the 2015 Re-Entry Draft came and went on Friday afternoon with just two players changing teams in the annual dispersal draft.  FC Dallas traded up to the top spot in the draft and picked Maximiliano Urruti from the Portland Timbers while Sporting Kansas City picked former Chicago Fire goalkeeper Alec Kann.  But that was only the tip of the iceberg for player movement on Friday, as several other players changed teams through trade and others re-signed with their former teams.

Urruti had 15 goals and five assists in three seasons with the Timbers and helped Portland to winning its first MLS Cup title on Sunday.  In addition to two matches with Toronto FC when he first came to MLS in 2013, he played 65 matches with Portland, starting just 28 times.

Kann, meanwhile, made just one start in three seasons with Chicago.

Players not selected today are eligible for Stage Two of the draft, which will take place on Thursday, December 17 at 1 p.m. MT.

In addition there were several trades.

Goalkeeper Zac MacMath will return to the Colorado Rapids after a trade with the Philadelphia Union.  The former No. 5 overall pick by the Union spent last season on loan to the Rapids has a career 35-41-29 record with 29 shutouts and a 1.37 goals against average, including three starts with Colorado while on loan last season.  In exchange, the Union received a second round pick in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft.

In addition to losing Urruti in the Re-Entry Draft, the Timbers also lost defender Jorge Villafana when he signed with Santos Laguna in Mexico.  However, Portland replaced the standout left back who helped key the MLS Cup victory by sending allocation money to the Columbus Crew in exchange for Chris Klute.  This is Klute’s third team in the last three seasons after stints with the Rapids and Crew.  In four MLS seasons, he has eight assists in 71 appearances.

Lastly on Thursday, New York City FC acquired defender Ethan White from the Philadelphia Union in exchange for a fourth round pick in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft.  White has appeared in 66 matches over five seasons with D.C. United and Philadelphia.
