Open Cup trophy 0528

SANDY, Utah (Thursday, June 18, 2015)  – Real Salt Lake will host the Portland Timbers in its match in the Round of 16 of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday, July 1 at Rio Tinto Stadium. Kickoff for the game – RSL’s eighth home match out of 10 total to be played in June and July – will be at 8:00 p.m. MT, following the USL Real Monarchs’ match against Sacramento Republic FC which kicks off at 5:00 p.m. MT.

The historic doubleheader event is included in the 2015 RSL season ticket package as BONUS GAME. General public tickets go on sale Monday, June 22, at 10:00 a.m. MT via RealSaltLake.com and RioTintoStadium.com, starting from as low as $25.

U.S. Soccer announced the draw for the Round of 16 and Quarterfinals on Thursday, setting the regional matchups for the next two rounds.  RSL will host the Timbers on July 1 and if the Claret-and-Cobalt advance, Rio Tinto Stadium will host the quarterfinal match against the winner of the fifth-round match between the LA Galaxy and San Jose Earthquakes.

RSL came back from a first-half 1-0 deficit to rally behind goals from FW Joao Plata and MF Javier Morales to top Seattle Sounders FC 2 of the USL on Tuesday at Rio Tinto Stadium in the fourth round of the tournament.

The Timbers had a dramatic win over Seattle Sounders FC in the only matchup in the fourth round between two MLS opponents.  Portland saw an early 1-0 erased by a goal from Obafemi Martins, forcing extra time and there, the Timbers took advantage of Seattle’s lack of composure to win 3-1 while Sounders FC was diminished to seven men due to an injury to Martins and red cards to Brad Evans, Micheal Azira and Clint Dempsey.

This will be the second match between Real Salt Lake and the Portland Timbers in the last three years in the Open Cup tournament.  RSL topped Portland 2-1 in the semifinal round in 2013.

In addition to the two matches on the field, the America First Credit Union Pavilion will open at 4 for a viewing of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup semifinal match.
