RSL History v. D.C.
United
The time for Real Salt Lake to move back to the top of the Western Conference table is now, as the Utah side will play seven of its next ten regular season contests at its Rio Tinto Stadium home, a span stretching through its Aug. 6 date against the New York Red Bulls in Sandy. That stretch begins Saturday with D.C. United, against whom RSL has compiled a 5-4-3 regular season ledger against. All five RSL victories against D.C. have come on Utah soil (5-1-0), including last season’s 3-0 triumph over the Black-and-Red on July 31 [Saborío (13’), Findley (79’), González (93+’)]. RSL and United also met in back-to-back games just over a year ago in sweltering conditions at RFK Stadium, with D.C. taking a 2-1 overtime result in a U.S. Open Cup qualifier on June 2 before the two sides dueled to a scoreless draw in a league meeting three days later.
RSL “Game Note” of the
Match: GK Nick Rimando’s D.C. Connections
Several MLS luminaries have called both the nation’s capital and the Beehive State their MLS home including GK Nick Rimando, who was RSL’s 2009 MLS Cup MVP and has been the defensive backbone for the team since his arrival in 2007, yet the stellar netminder won his first MLS Cup with United in 2004 … Rimando dominates the record books for both sides, owning all the significant goalkeeping milestones for each team … United Head Coach Ben Olsen – a teammate of Rimando’s during his tenure in D.C. – officiated the RSL goalkeeper’s wedding to the former Jacqui Little back in December, 2005 in Malibu, Calif.
Rimando – a 12-year MLS veteran who has started in every career appearance in goal, and who won MLS Cup in 2004 with United and in 2009 with RSL – came into MLS with the Miami Fusion … A comparison of Rimando’s outstanding D.C. and RSL careers:
