Team of the Week: Martinez Mystifies to Earn Honor

The votes are in for Week 1 and Juan Manuel Martinez made the MLSsoccer.com Team of the Week after notching one assist in RSL’s 2-2 draw with Orlando City SC.

Burrito dazzled with his dribbling in the first half, bewildering defender Luke Boden on the endline to set up a scoring chance in the first half only to have his shot saved by Joe Bendik.  Then in the second half, he had the second assist on Joao Plata’s second goal of the match, again mystifying with his footwork to beat two defenders before cutting the ball to Tony Beltran, who crossed to Plata for the goal.

It was part of a dynamic offense that left Head Coach Jeff Cassar impressed.

“It was good soccer.  We were dangerous on many occasions, which was good,” he said.  “We’re dynamic.  You can’t take away one thing because we’ll get you with something else.”

Martinez was joined on Team of the Week by goalkeeper David Bingham (San Jose Earthquakes); defenders Ashley Cole (LA Galaxy), Drew Moor (Toronto FC) and Walker Zimmerman (FC Dallas); midfielders Tommy McNamara (New York City FC), Diego Chara (Portland Timbers) and Diego Fagundez (New England Revolution); and forwards Cyle Larin (Orlando City SC), Ignacio Piatti (Montreal Impact) and Mike Magee (LA Galaxy).

For his two-goal effort, Joao Plata was named to the seven-man bench this week.
