Real Salt Lake came out early with the possession, but it was quickly overtaken by Whitecaps FC and began peppering Andrew Putna in goal, who made several quick reaction saves to try and preserve the scoreline. But ultimately Vancouver broke through in the 33rd minute when an unfortunate deflection from a corner led to an own goal. In his first RSL start Noah Powder nearly found the equalizer, lacing a shot from 35 yards, but his effort was saved by the goalkeeper and then the post as RSL went into halftime down a goal.

The hosts scored three goals in quick succession to start the second half, leaving RSL chasing the game. The first came in the 53rd minute when Putnamishandled a strong cross that fell to Brian White who slammed the ball into the empty net. Whitecaps FC added a third in the 64th minute when Ryan Gauld headed a cross home inside the box. Whitecaps FC then solidified its victory over RSL through Florian Jungwirth who clipped a glancing header into the far side netting in the 69th minute.

As a second-half substitute, Julio was able to erase some of the deficit in the final minutes of the match when he cleaned up a poorly cleared ball, netting his fifth goal of the season. However, the late surge was not enough to overcome the hosts and the match ended 4-1 for Whitecaps FC.
