Real Salt Lake Suffer Its Worst-Ever Defeat

BRONX, New York (Sunday, April 17, 2022) – Real Salt Lake (3-2-3, 12 points)suffered its worst loss in Club history, dropping a 6-0 result to the defending MLS Cup Champions New York City FC.

Within the narrow lines of Yankee Stadium, Real Salt Lake came out as the aggressors in the first few minutes, putting back-to-back shots on target. But the home team quickly regained momentum, finding the opening goal in the ninth minute off the head of 2021 MLS Golden Boot winner Valentin Castellanos. Just a few moments later New York City doubled their lead when Thiago Andrade’s left-footed shot found the back of the net.

Just shy of the halftime break New York was awarded a penalty kick after Tate Schmitts high boot collided with the face of Keaton Parks. It was Castellanos who stepped up to the spot, slamming home his second goal of the game, to take the 3-0 lead heading into halftime.

Coming out of the halftime break, Head Coach Pablo Mastroeni adjusted the formation to a 3-5-2, but the defensive woes continued as Andrade netted his second goal in the 55th minute. Two minutes later New York City was awarded its second penalty kick after Jaziel Orozco’s boot collided with Castellanos inside the box. Castellanos put away the penalty kick, securing a hat trick for himself in the 57th minute.

With just 10 minutes remaining, in an attempt to clear the ball, goalkeeper Zac MacMath’s pass fell directly at the feet of Castellanos who was able to one touch the ball on frame glancing off the sliding body of Marcelo Silva and into the back of the net, capping off the day with his fourth goal and the 6-0 victory.
