2022 Records: Real Monarchs (0-6-2, 2 points); Houston Dynamo 2 (6-1-1,19 points)
Head-to-Head: Real Monarchs and Houston Dynamo 2 have not previously faced one another.
T-Breezy Don’t Take It Easy
Since returning to Real Monarchs after suffering a preseason injury, midfielder Tyrone Mondi has been a much needed offensive spark for the Club. In his first five appearances, Mondi has led the Monarchs in shots in four of those matches, including in his first appearance when he stepped on as a second-half substitute. Additionally, the South Africa native is also second in goals with two after scoring a first-half brace against Sporting Kansas City II.
Have to Beat the Best to Be the Best
Now through a third of its first season in MLS NEXT Pro, Real Monarchs have faced some of the top talent in the newly-formed league. Within its first eight matches, the Monarchs have faced six of the top seven clubs in the Western Conference, including its most recent match against first place North Texas SC.
Real Monarchs’ matchup with Houston Dynamo 2 will be another tough battle as Houston currently sits in second in the Western Conference. Dynamo 2 also fields won of the most prolific forwards in the league, Beto Avila, who has tallied five goals thus far, tied for second overall in the MLS Golden Boot Race.
This will be the second time where Real Monarchs and Real Salt Lake will play against affiliated opponents during the same week. Real Salt Lake will host Houston Dynamo just three days after the Monarchs host Dynamo 2. Earlier in the season, Real Monarchs visited Portland Timbers 2 the day after RSL faced the Timbers first team in Portland.
Additionally, RSL and the Monarchs will have back-to-back matches with the San Jose Earthquakes organization twice this season. First, when San Jose Earthquakes II and San Jose Earthquakes travel to Utah on June 17 and 18, and then just a month later when RSL and Real Monarchs travel to the West Coast to face the Northern California side on July 30 and 31.
In recent weeks, several Real Salt Lake contracted players have joined the Monarchs on assignment to play more in-game minutes and further develop in a more competitive environment than training. RSL Homegrowns David Ochoa, Bode Davis, Chris Garcia, and Jaziel Orozco are currently on assignment with Real Monarchs, all being featured in the Club’s last match against North Texas SC.
Additionally, defender Chris Kablan, who signed with RSL on May 4, is the most recent player to be put on assignment and added to the Monarchs roster ahead of Wednesday’s match versus Houston Dynamo 2. Kablan made his MLS debut last week in Real Salt Lake’s match with C.F. Montreal, appearing as a late-game substitute in the 2-1 win for the Claret-and-Cobalt.
