Monarchs Match Recaps

Real Monarchs Gain First Road Result

Hillsboro, Oregon (Sunday, April 24, 2022) – Real Monarchs (0-2-2, 2 points) earned its first road result with a 1-1 draw at Timbers 2, but were unable to secure the extra point in the shootout, coming up short with 4-2 on kicks from the penalty mark.Captain Pedro Fonseca netted his fourth goal of the season, while goalkeeper Tomas Gomez made nine saves in goal, but neither were enough to secure all three points on the road.

Both teams came out swinging early, with each getting their fair share of opportunities as they looked to secure their respective first wins of the season. The Monarchs started off on the offensive foot in the third minute when Pierre Reedy’s header off a Bode Davis cross skipped just wide left of the goal. Three minutes later Jack Imperato forced the first save of the match from Timbers 2 goalkeeper, Hunter Sulte, when he blasted a left-footed shot on target, connecting on a cross from Terron Williams.

Timbers 2 responded with multiple chances of their own, but were denied on all of them as Monarchs goalkeeper Tomas Gomez recorded five saves in the first half, keeping the score knotted at 0-0 heading into the break.

Real Monarchs came out of halftime aggressive and were the first to break the deadlock in the 51st minute when Fonseca stripped the ball from a Timbers 2 defender. The Brazilian forward cut in towards goal from the left side to set up a right-footed shot that tucked its way into the far-right post. Timbers 2 responded quickly with a goal of their own in the 55th minute on a right-footed shot from Blake Bodily to tie the match 1-1.

Both sides continued to press, looking for the game winner, forcing Gomez to come up big on multiple occasions, successfully holding Portland’s staunch offense at bay. Second-half substitute Tyrone Mondi set up a tight-angled shot in the 87th minute for the team’s final chance at goal, but Sulte made the save, sending the match into a shootout to determine the recipient of the second point.

Despite a save from Gomez in the shootout, a save from Hunter Shulte and a miss from Bode Davis saw Portland walk away with the extra point.
