Minimal Moves Expected in Stage One of the Re-Entry Draft

Boniek Garcia

Friday marks the start of the sixth edition of the MLS Re-Entry Draft, with Stage One starting via conference call with representatives from each team around the league at 1 p.m. MT.  There are several intriguing names on the list of available players, but as we’ve seen in previous years, the first stage is typically very quiet.

In the five previous editions of the Re-Entry Draft – designed as a method of distributing players around the league whose options were declined by their previous teams – 14 total players were selected in the first stage when selecting teams must pick up the option of the player.  Meanwhile, 51 players have been selected in the second stage, when teams have the right to negotiate with the selected players.

Last year, Toronto FC made former RSL forward Robbie Findley the third player selected in Re-Entry after goalkeepers Erik Kronberg and Andy Gruenebaum went to the Montreal Impact and San Jose Earthquakes, respectively.  That relatively quiet draft came one year after five players were selected in the 2013 draft, led by D.C. United selecting defensive cornerstones Sean Franklin and Bobby Boswell.  Prior to that, the transactions in the first stage of Re-Entry had been fairly benign, with players making limited impacts.

This year, Orlando City goalkeeper Tally Hall, Houston Dynamo midfielder Boniek Garcia, Seattle Sounders midfielder Marco Pappa and Portland Timbers forward Maxi Urruti highlight the eligible players.
