Game at a Glance: Savarino and Cordova Put on a Clinic to Earn Crucial Road Win

Real Salt Lake 2 vs. 1 Seattle Sounders
August 14, 2022; Lumen Field, Seattle, Washington

Real Salt Lake (10-8-7, 37 points); Seattle Sounders (10-13-2, 32 points)

Co-Men of the Match: Winger Jefferson Savarino was pivotal in the attack, setting up both goals in tonightā€™s win. Savarino first played a perfect through ball to forward Sergio Cordova who found the net after a 50-yard run to open the scoring for RSL. The Venezuelan international then backed that up by finding RSL Homegrown Andrew Brody on a short cross for Real Salt Lake to take home the three points and his fourth assist of the 2022 season. Savarino led the Club in key passes with three and fired a shot of his own. Cordova continued his offensive tear in tonightā€™s win, finding the back of the net for a second consecutive match. Cordova helped secure the three points on the defensive end as well, clearing multiple balls out of the box with his head and consistently pressuring Seattleā€™s backline. The forward also helped set up Andrew Brodyā€™s game-winner, finding fellow Venezuelan Jefferson Savarino who connected with Brody to secure the three points. Additionally, Cordova led RSL in shots with two and now is in sole possession in Club goals with six.

Telling Stat: With tonightā€™s win, Real Salt Lake is now 10-1-4 in matches after a loss under Head Coach Pablo Mastroeni. In 39 matches under Mastroeni, RSL has dropped two-consecutive matches only once, dating back to the 2021 season when the Club lost back to back matches to San Jose Earthquakes and Portland Timbers. This is Real Salt Lakeā€™s first regular-season win at Lumen Field since September 18, 2018 when the Club defeated the Rave Green 1-0 behind a goal from former RSL Homegrown Sebastian Saucedo. Additionally, this is only the Clubā€™s second regular-season win at Seattle since 2013, dropping 11 of its last 13 in the Pacific Northwest.

What You Missed: Real Salt Lake earned a much needed win on the road, defeating Seattle Sounders 2-1. Forward Sergio Cordova netted his club-leading sixth goal of the season while defender Andrew Brodyā€™s game-winner was his second of the season and his second career MLS goal. Winger Jefferson Savarino set up both of RSLā€™s goals despite only earning one assist on the night, his fourth of the season. RSL Homegrown Erik Holt also made his return to the squad for the first match since July 13 against Atlanta United.
