Academy set for Saturday matches

The Real Salt Lake U-17 and U-19 sides return to action after a one week hiatus to take on Nomads SC from California at America First Field in Sandy on Saturday (11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. MT).


The two sides come into the match against Nomads with varying records as the RSL U-17 side is coming off a 2-0 win over the Portland Timbers U-17s on September 2, while the U-19 side fell in Week 1 to a physical Portland side, 2-1 on the same day.

Academy set for Saturday matches -

RSL U-17s found second half goals from FW Benjamin Ortiz and MF Derek Silva to nab its first win of the season as GK David Ochoa played the full 90 minutes and earned the shutout in goal.


RSL U-19 side faced a Portland Timbers U-19 team that came to Rio Tinto Stadium with something to prove against one of the best academy sides in the country in RSL and found a result. Goals on either side of halftime from Portland forward Akil Watts proved the difference before FW Sebastian Soto found a late headed goal to cut the visitor’s lead in half.


RSL U-19 MF Taylor Booth will feature in the match after being called by USMNT U-17 Head Coach John Hackworth into the U-17 squad for a six-day training camp ahead of the team’s U-17 World Cup beginning October 6 in India.


Academy Technical Director Martin Vasquez’s teams will both look to win the second matches of the year as the U-17 look to build on its win over Portland while the U-19s will to exact the season opening loss. The U-17s will kick off at 11:00 a.m. MT with the U-19 match following the conclusion of the younger match at 1:30 p.m.
