RSL Welcomes SKC to Rio Tinto Stadium on May 1 After Visit to Minnesota United on April 24

HERRIMAN, Utah (Wednesday, March 10, 2021) – Real Salt Lake in conjunction with Major League Soccer today announced its 2021 home opener against Sporting Kansas City on Saturday, May 1 at Rio Tinto Stadium.  Kickoff time for the club’s match against Sporting KC is set for 12 p.m. MT.  RSL will welcome one of its most heated rivals after opening its 17th season in Major League Soccer one week prior on Saturday, April 24 against Minnesota United FC with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m. MT.  Both matches will be broadcast live on KMYU, the KSL TV app and ESPN 700.

RSL enters its 17th season in Major League Soccer having earned a 6-1-9 record all-time in home-opening matches dating back to its inaugural season in 2005 and is 5-1-6 all-time in home-openers held at Rio Tinto Stadium.


Real Salt Lake is 7-3-2 all-time at Rio Tinto Stadium against Sporting Kansas City, including a seven-match home unbeaten streak from 2015-2019.


RSL Head Coach Freddy Juarez is entering his second season at the helm.  After reaching the playoffs in each of the previous two seasons, Salt Lake missed the postseason in 2020 and is looking to regain its place among the top teams in the Western Conference standings.  With Albert Rusnak and Damir Kreilach leading a dynamic attack and Justen Glad, Marcelo Silva and Aaron Herrera anchoring a defense that was among the stingiest in the league in 2019, things look promising for Real in 2021.

Season tickets for the 2021 season start at just $14 per match.  The club is working with the State of Utah Department of Health and Major League Soccer to finalize plans to safely brings fans into the stadium this season and will provide more information on attending matches as soon as the safety protocols and procedures are approved.
