Real Salt Lake Falls 2-0 in San Jose

SAN JOSE, California (Wednesday, October 28 2020) – Real Salt Lake (5-8-7, 22 points) suffered a 2-0 defeat to the San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday from Earthquakes Stadium.

RSL goalkeeper Andrew Putna made two saves on the night, but two goals from Chris Wondolowski proved to be the difference in the match.

Postgame quotes from RSL v SJ.

San Jose opened scoring in the 16th minute when Chris Wondolowski scored a putback goal after Cristian Espinoza’s initial effort was tipped off the upright.  The Earthquakes continued to control the match through much of the first half until a late surge from RSL put San Jose under pressure.  While Salt Lake ended up outshooting San Jose 6-5 by the end of the half, it wasn’t able to find the equalizer and went into halftime trailing 1-0.

RSL pressed to equalize, but with San Jose dropped back defensively, gaps to shoot were unavailable.  The Earthquakes blocked five of RSL’s nine shots in the match and added a second goal when Wondolowski netted his sixth of the season in the 74th minute and Salt Lake succumbed to the 2-0 defeat.

UP NEXT: Real Salt Lake returns to the road to face the LA Galaxy on Sunday, November 1 at Dignity Health Sports Park.  Kickoff is set for 8:30 p.m. MT.

GOAL SCORING RUNDOWN:

SJ: Chris Wondolowski 16th minute - After a ball in from the left side, Cristian Espinoza fired a shot that Andrew Putna tipped into the far post.  The rebound caromed to Chris Wondolowski alone for the putback goal, his fifth of the season, for a 1-0 lead.

SJ: Chris Wondolowski (Shea Salinas) 74th minute - Shea Salinas made a run up the right side and sent a cross into the box that clipped Justen Glad’s heel.  The redirected ball fell right into the path of Chris Wondolowski at the far post for his second goal of the night and a 2-0 San Jose lead.

NOTES:

- Real Salt Lake forwards Giuseppe Rossi, Jeizon Ramirez and Chris Garcia were not medically cleared to play.

- Kyle Beckerman’s substitute appearance in the 86th minute marked his 350th regular season game played for Real Salt Lake.  He now has 498 appearances in his MLS career, two away from becoming the first field player in MLS history to record 500 regular season games played.

- With his yellow card in the 59th minute, defender Aaron Herrera will be unavailable against the LA Galaxy due to yellow card accumulation.
