Utah Royals FC Falls 2-0 on the Road to the Washington Spirit

SANDY, Utah – (Saturday, June 1, 2019) – Utah Royals FC (4-2-1, 13 points) was held scoreless for the first time this season, falling 2-0 to the Washington Spirit at Maryland SoccerPlex. Ashley Hatch and Dorian Bailey scored the two goals for the Spirit.

Royals FC has several chances for goal, including six shots on target. The squad’s best chance at net was in the 65th minute when MF Erika Tymrak made a run at the left side of goal, sending a cross into MF Gunny Jonsdottir who made a one-touch pass to FW Amy Rodriguez. Stepping to her right, Rodriguez took a shot at the bottom left hand corner, but Spirit goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe was there to scoop it up.
UP NEXT: URFC will take a 12-day break between matches in conjunction with the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup tournament in France. Following the completion of the group stage, league play will start back up. Royals FC’s first game back will take place at Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday, June 15 at 8:00 p.m. MT against Sky Blue FC.

WAS: Ashley Hatch (Tori Huster)  23rd minute: Tori Huster found the ball and dribbled it down the right side of the field, passing it off to Ashley Hatch at the top of the 18-yard-box who took a turn and sent the ball into the far-left side of goal.

WAS: Dorian Bailey 70th minute: Ashley Hatch’s shot was saved by GK Nicole Barnhart, hitting the crossbar off her glove, Dorian Bailey picked up the rebound inside the box and sent a one-touch shot into goal.
NOTES:

- Utah played without DF Katie Bowen (NZL), DF Rachel Corsie (SCO), MF Desiree Scott (CAN), DF Becky Sauerbrunn (USA), FW Christen Press (USA) and DF/FW Kelley O’Hara (USA) due to international duty as they enter preparation for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. MF Diana Matheson also missed the match due to injury.
- Royals FC was also without MF Lo’eau LaBonta who was issued a two-game suspension for major game misconduct during last weekend’s match against the Orlando Pride.
- DF Michelle Maemone made her way back into the starting lineup for the first time since May 11. Maemone suited up at rightback in place of DF Katie Bowen who with New Zealand preparing for the Women’s World Cup.
- After being signed earlier this week as a national team replacement, MF Alexa Newfield made her first appearance for Utah in the 72nd minute, entering the game for FW Katie Stengel.
- URFC was held scoreless for the first time this season.
