Real Monarchs SLC Drops 4-2 Result Against Phoenix Rising FC

Real Monarchs SLC (3-5-3, 12 points) fell in its second match of the Four-Corners Cup to a 4-2 result against Phoenix Rising FC on Saturday. DF Marcelo Silva and FW Douglas Martinez tallied to the two Monarchs goals. Silva, along with RSL men DFs Erik Holt, Brooks Lennon and GK Andrew Putna each made appearances in the Starting XI.

The Monarchs came out of the gate quickly as Silva opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a headed effort after DF Andrew Brody lobbed the ball into the penalty area from near the middle of the park. Martinez tallied the second for the Monarchs soon after in a similar fashion as this time MF Ricardo Avila sent the ball in to the far post where Martinez jumped to meet with the inside of his right foot to double the lead.

Before the end of the half Phoenix Rising responded quickly as Adam Jahn slipped in a goal from within six yards. Minutes later, Phoenix leveled out the scoring when Jon Bakero got a foot out to put a stop to a clearance from Putna that sent it into the air. Putna reached to punch the ball away but it ultimately fell beyond the goal line.

The second half saw Phoenix Rising FC fall into its rhythm as it was able to put a stop to an aggressive Monarchs offense. Phoenix picked up its third goal early in the second half with some strong passing play that snuck in around the Monarchs defense to rifle in a shot. The Monarchs responded with a fight taking opportunities that ended being stopped by the Rising FC ‘keeper. The final goal came in the dying moments as Solomon Asante blasted a shot from the top of the box to end the match.

GOAL SCORING RUNDOWN

SLC: Marcelo Silva (Andrew Brody), 10th minute – After a corner kick from the Monarchs was cleared into the midfield, the ball found itself at the feet of Andrew Brody, who immediately lobbed it back into the middle of the penalty area. The ball took a bounce where Marcelo Silva got his head to push the Monarchs onto the board early.

SLC: Douglas Martínez (Ricardo Avila), 25th minute – Phoenix Rising FC was able to make another clearance out of the box following a Monarchs corner kick, which Avila quickly played back in to the far post. Douglas Martinez made a run forward and took a jump to tap it in with the inside of his right foot.

PHX: Adam Jahn (José Aguinaga), 32nd minute – A tight run to the Monarchs end line saw Phoenix Rising capitalize on an opportunity as José Aguinaga made a quick pass towards the middle to Adam Jahn, who barely got the tap in to pull one back on the Monarchs lead.

PHX: Jon Bakero, 35th minute – As Andrew Putna aimed to clear the ball out the box, Jon Bakero got a foot in to send the ball into the air. Putna rushed to punch the ball away from the net, however it wasn’t enough as the ball fell beyond the goal line.

PHX: Junior Flemming (José Aguinaga), 60th minute – Phoenix Rising FC took a break in towards the Monarchs goal, making quick passing play between Flemming and Aguinaga to get around the backline. The build up paid off as Aguinaga’s touch to Flemming converted into a goal to steal the lead.

PHX: Solomon Asante (Joey Calistri), 81st minute – Phoenix Rising FC picked up a throw-in that started the play at Joey Calistri’s feet. Calistri sent the pass over to Asante who fought off his defender to create space at the top of the box and rifle a shot for the fourth and final of the night.

KEY SAVES AND DEFENSIVE STOPS

PHX: Zac Luben, 15th minute: Just minutes after he opened the scoring, Marcelo Silva took another chance with a headed effort from a Monarchs corner kick. Lightning did not strike twice for Silva however, as Phoenix Goalkeeper Zac Luben was there to make the save.

SLC: Andrew Brody, 75th minute: Phoenix Rising made another dangerous run in the Monarchs attacking third that ended with a low cross in towards the center of the box that looked to be the fourth Phoenix goal in the night. Brody was able to get in with a sliding effort to clear the shot before it could find the net.
