Real Monarchs
Head Coach Martin Vasquez
On the comeback:
“All week, after New Mexico, we talked about responding. I thought we had a bad game against New Mexico. We started off well and ended up learning from that moment, from that game. We started off, not flat, but making individual mistakes. A couple of personal mistakes and we’re down 2-0. After the 2-0, or even before, we were getting chances. If at halftime we put one in, it’s maybe fair to say that it’s a 2-1 game. But after halftime, when we made a couple changes, we talked about keeping the momentum that we ended the first half with. That happened, and there was still a lot of game to play. Patience. We settled the game down; we got our chances, and took them well. The three points is a recognition or a reward for the response that they had.”
On Kyle Coffee’s performance:
“He’s been showing quality. He’s been showing that he can be busy around the box and when he had the chance, he took it well. In the first half, a couple guys got some chances as clear as that and did not take them. So good for him, I think he came in and gave us some life. It helped the substitution and we’re going to congratulate him because that was big for everyone.”
On moving forward against Austin Bold FC:
“Right now, we just need to take a deep breath and we will start preparing on Monday. Once we see the tape, once we see what kind of team we will be playing, we have to go there with the right mentality.”
Midfielder Kyle Coffee
On scoring the game winning goal:
“I feel great. It's always special when you get your first, but today it was really special for me because my entire family was out here and my best friends from high school. It was a big-time thing. My brother came down from Idaho and my brother Scott, who has special needs, he doesn't get out to very many games and he was able to come out today. It was great to score for them.”
On the comeback:
“It says a lot about our personality as a team. We will fight through anything. You know the odds may be stacked against us but we are not going to give up. We are a bunch of scrapers and fighters won't give up without a fight. It's big for the team to fight back from a 2-0 deficit.”
Midfielder Jack Blake
On the comeback to get the win:
“It says is we have strong character within the group. I'm extremely proud of the boys in not letting their heads drop and, most importantly, stick to our style of football. I thought we did that very well. Not many teams can come back from 2-0 at half time.”
On Kyle Coffee’s performance:
“Coffee, on and off the field, has a lot of respect from the players. He works very hard. He keeps to himself but he made a big impact today, so did Masta, but it's a team effort as a team grew. We're a whole family. Every time everyone steps on the field, they put everything into it. Kyle had a very good game and made a really good impact.”
On mentality moving forward against another expansion team:
“To get the road win. We're a team that doesn't go away just to get a tie; we go to get three points every game. We have the qualities to do that. That was a big target going into this week. We're going to put a good weekend and train in and take our confidence from this game into next week.”
On beating San Antonio for the first time since 2016:
“We have a special group. They're very good team, well organized, defensively their coach sets them up very well. But tonight, I think we were patient on the ball and we broke them down. Fitness wise as well. We were very strong tonight and we were rewarded.”
San Antonio FC
Head Coach Darren Powell
On the match:
“We have to focus. In the first half we had a better performance and in the second half we got ourselves on the back foot and couldn’t recover from that. We are disappointed by the result and as a group we know we can perform better.”
On Brian Gomez’s performance:
“Brian has been good from day one since arriving and works very hard. He plays his role very hard so I am please he has got off the mark today. Obviously it would have been better if we had earned some points on the road.”
Midfielder Billy Forbes
On the match result:
“We always knew it would be a tough game, any time you play on the road its always a tough game. I think we deserved at least a tie, but that’s the way the game goes. We are going to learn from this and be ready for next week.”
On the team’s play in the second half:
“Its one of those days where some stuff didn’t work for us in the second half, but we have to learn from it and go back and correct those mistakes. That’s the way soccer works sometimes.”
On returning home for the next match
“It will be great to be at home in front of our crowd. They will get us going and get our confidence back and hopefully we will get a win in front of our crowd and get going again”
