Utah Side Looks to End Seven-Match Road-Winless Skid against Galaxy II in Carson

HERRIMAN, Utah (Friday, September 21, 2018) – Real Monarchs SLC (17-10-3, 54 points, 3 West) will end its five-day trip to Southern California on Saturday night when it faces LA Galaxy II at StubHub Center at 8:30 p.m. MT. The match could likely see Interim Head Coach Jamison Olave’s side clinch its place in the 2018 USL Cup Playoffs for the second consecutive season.

Against Los Angeles, the Monarchs could potentially secure a playoff berth for the second straight season needing just a single point as two scenarios factor into a possible berth. Below are the scenarios in which the Monarchs could reach the playoffs on Saturday:

  1. The Monarchs claim victory or draw with LA Galaxy II on Saturday.
  2. The Monarchs win, draw or lose and San Antonio fails to claim a win over Saint Louis FC earlier in the evening. (SAvSTL kicks off at 6:30 p.m. MT on ESPN+).

The Monarchs are coming off the back of a 2-5 loss at Western Conference leaders Orange County SC on Wednesday night, a match that saw DF Kalen Ryden and MF Justin Portillo each score goals in the loss. OCSC’s second half surge overpowered the Monarchs at Champions Soccer Stadium as the Utah side suffered its worst loss of the year.

The Monarchs and LA Galaxy II have faced one another on one occasion in 2018, a result that heavily favored the Monarchs as FW Chandler Hoffman’s brace paired with MF Maikel Chang and MF Charlie Adams’ goals saw the Monarchs run to a convincing 4-0 victory.

Real Monarchs moved away from the home of Real Salt Lake and Utah Royals FC at Rio Tinto Stadium in April to christen the new, 5,000 seat Zions Bank Stadium on the campus of the $78 million Zions Bank Real Academy in Herriman, Utah. The state-of-the-art venue will boast a full-service press box and broadcasting booth as well as concessions on either side of the stadium. Officially opening April 2018, the Monarchs will host 17 regular-season matches at Zions Bank Stadium in the first year at the league’s newest venue starting with an April 30 match against Las Vegas Lights FC for the first ever “Saints-and-Sinners/I-15” Rivalry.

The Herriman facility provides adjacencies for an on-site charter school in conjunction with the Jordan School District, which opened last August, focusing on STEM disciplines (Science/Technology/Engineering/Math) for nearly 300 boys and girls, kicking off a new era for both sports and education in Utah.

Last December in North Logan, Utah, RSL Owner Dell Loy Hansen christened the opening of the first of a half-dozen regional training centers across Utah and Arizona to be built in the next 2-3 years.  Each $5 million RTC houses a classroom, as well as an indoor and outdoor field, dedicated to fulfilling a curriculum consistent with the club's vision and mission for youth soccer training and education, and the continued development of both recreational and competitive pre-Academy (ages 7-14) initiatives across Utah and Arizona.
