Defender Stanely Okumu Called to Kenyan National Team; Striker Jamal Charles Called to Grenada

HERRIMAN, Utah (Thursday, August 30, 2018) –Two Real Monarchs SLC players have been called to represent their national teams as DF Stanley Okumu and FW Jamal Charles have both been summoned for matches during the FIFA International window. Okumu has been called to the Kenyan National Team while Charles is set to join the Grenadian National Team.


“As a club, we could not be more proud and excited of Jamal and Stanley’s call ups with their respective national teams,” Real Monarchs General Manager Dan Egner said. These accomplishments are a testament to the work they have been putting in, and we wish them nothing but success while away. They both have big matchups during this window, and we are looking forward to seeing them on the field.”


While away with their respective national teams, the duo will miss three Monarchs matches beginning with the club’s home match on September 3 against San Antonio FC, followed by September 8 at Rio Grande Valley FC and Saint Louis FC on September 12 at Zions Bank Stadium.  


Okumu and Kenya will face Ghana on September 8 in an African Cup of Nations Qualifying match in Kenya before a friendly against Malawi on September 11. Okumu has also spent time with the Kenyan U-21, 23 and Senior team contingents since the 2016 season. Okumu has yet to feature for the Monarchs since signing with the club on August 16.


Charles and Grenada will face Curacao on September 10th in Curacao as part of the CONCACAF Nations League in preparation to qualify for the CONCACAF Gold Cup. With the Grenadian National Team, Charles has made 13 appearances and has scored 6 goals for his country. Charles has featured on one occasion this season for the Monarchs since signing on August 2, playing the final seven minutes of the Monarchs 4-0 victory over LA Galaxy II on August 25.


The Monarchs return home to Zions Bank Stadium to face San Antonio FC on September 3 as it looks to remain unbeaten in its new home.
