SACRAMENTO, California (Saturday, July 7, 2018) â€“ Real Monarchs SLC (12-4-2, 38 points, 1 West) settled for a scoreless draw on Saturday night at Western Conference Rival Sacramento Republic FC. The draw marks just the second draw of the season for the Monarchs, both of which were scoreless matches.

The Monarchs nearly found the back of the net in the 9th minute when DF James Moberg struck the post but couldn’t get a foot on the rebound to turn the ball home at the second time of asking. The first half became open after that point as Republic FC forced GK Jake Leeker into a highlight reel save in the 12th minute as his fingertips forced the ball onto the post to deny the hosts the opener.

In the second half, the Monarchs fell under heavy pressure ultimately conceding a penalty kick in the 52nd minute. Staying true to Monarchs fashion, Republic midfielder Cameron Iwasa struck the post with his shot, keeping the match scoreless. With the miss, Monarchs opponents are now 2 for 14 for penalty kicks against the Monarchs since the beginning of 2017. Throughout the rest of the match the Monarchs defense led by Moberg, stood firm to help steal a point from Sacramento and remain atop the United Soccer League Standings.

UP NEXT: The Monarchs return to Zions Bank Stadium on Saturday, July 14th to face Seattle Sounders FC 2 for the second time in 2018. Kick off in Herriman is set for 8:00 p.m. MT.

KEY SAVES AND DEFENSIVE STOPS:

SLC: Jake Leeker, 12th minute: A clipped cross sent into the area found the head of Cameron Iwasa whos header looked destined for goal. Leeker – going the opposite way – reacted well to tip the ball onto the post to keep the match scoreless.

- Rhys Williams earned his second start as a Monarch at right back.

- Sebastian Velasquez returned to the starting lineup after serving his suspension and recovering from injury.

- Monarchs opponents are now 2 for 14 from the penalty spot against the Monarchs since the beginning of 2017.
