Real Salt Lake Suffers Third Straight Loss, 3-0 to FC Dallas

Sandy, UT (Saturday, May 6, 2017) – A third minute FC Dallas penalty from Maximilano Urruti led the way for the visiting side as The Hoops downed Real Salt Lake (2-6-2, 8pts) 3-0 at Rio Tinto Stadium.


After RSL fell behind early, MF Sebastian Saucedo led attack after attack but couldn’t generate a goal or an assist to his name before the halftime whistle sounded.


FC Dallas found the game’s second goal through defender Matt Hedges as he headed home a Kellyn Acosta corner kick in the 68th minute.


The second half led to more sustained possession and opportunities for the Claret-and-Cobalt but weren’t able to find the back of the net. GK Matt VanOekel was kept busy in the second half, making three key saves to keep the score line at 2-0 until stoppage time when Urruti notched his second of the game to make it 3-0.


UP NEXT: The Claret-and-Cobalt head east looking to win get back on track against the New England Revolution when the two sides meet on May 13 at Gillette Stadium (5:30 pm MST kickoff).  In 2016 RSL and the Revolution played to a scoreless draw at Rio Tinto Stadium on July 16 in their only meeting of the year. RSL is 9-5-4 all-time against New England, scoring 34 goals in the 18 games between the two sides.


GOAL SCORING RUNDOWN:

FCD – Maximiliano Urruti (Penalty), 3rd minute: A handball in the box by RSL defender Demar Phillips resulted in a penalty kick for Dallas.  Urruti Stepped up and calmly drove the ball into the right side of the net as RSL goalkeeper Matt VanOekel dove left.


FCD – Matt Hedges (Kellyn Acosta) 68th minute: A corner swung in by Acosta found the head of Hedges who snapped the off-balance header into the far corner of the RSL net.


FCD – Maximiliano Urruti 90’+1: The FC Dallas striker had acres of space from a goalkick into the attacking half as he rushed toward the RSL net.  Urruti chipped the ball up to himself over RSL goalkeeper Matt Van Oekel and touched the ball into the net for his second of the game.


KEY SAVES AND DEFENSIVE STOPS:

RSL – Justin Schmidt, 13th minute: A quick counter led to several chances to score for FC Dallas. After several attempts on goal, Dallas has a chance at what seemed to be an open net but Schmidt was in position to clear the ball off the line and out for a throw in.


RSL – Aaron Maund, 38th minute: Another Dallas counter attack saw a ball crossed in by Dallas midfielder Victor Ulloa. RSL defender Aaron Maund let the ball run to the outside of the box as an onrushing Roland Lamah met the ball with a ferocious strike. Maund put himself between the shot and his goalkeeper to block the shot.


FCD – Jesse Gonzalez, 43rd minute: A thunderous strike from RSL midfielder Sebastian Saucedo tested the Dallas goalkeeper, but Gonzalez got strong hands to the ball to hold onto the shot.


RSL – Chris Wingert, 55th minute: FC Dallas striker Kellyn Acosta got himself into a position to fire the ball across the face of goal towards fellow striker Tesho Akindele. Wingert did just enough to get a touch on the ball to hit it off the post and out for a corner kick.


RSL – Matt VanOekel, 66th minute: Dallas midfielder Michael Barrios put himself in on goal as he attempted a half-volley towards Matt VanOekel’s far post. VanOekel did well to react quickly to the strike to tip it around the post for a corner kick.


RSL – Demar Phillips, 75th minute: FC Dallas midfielder Kellyn Acosta found himself running in on goal with Phillips chasing closely behind. As Acosta cut back to attempt a curling shot, Phillips recovered well to block the shot out for a corner kick.


FCD – Jesse Gonzalez, 84th minute: RSL midfielder Luke Mulholland found himself with a shot through traffic from just outside the Dallas penalty area. Mulholland rifled the shot but Gonzlaez handled the ball well, collapsing to his right to hang onto the shot.


RSL – Matt VanOekel, 90th minute: FC Dallas striker Cristian Colman broke away for a counter attack and attempted to slide the ball past VanOekel but the RSL net-minder was up to the task as he


NOTES:
- RSL defender Aaron Maund returned to the lineup after battling a hamstring injury, making his first appearance since an April 1 matchup at Minnesota. Maund played 78 minutes against FC Dallas.


- Former RSL midfielder Javier Morales made his return to Rio Tinto Stadium for the first time since his departure during the offseason, saluting the fans before and after the game.  Morales was on the bench for FC Dallas, but did not feature in the match.


- In the absence of midfielder Kyle Beckerman, RSL defender Chris Wingert assumed the captain’s role for the club for the second straight week.


- Maximilano Urruti’s goal in the third minute snapped RSL’s home shutout streak against Dallas at 216 minutes.
