SANDY, UT (Tuesday, August 7, 2018) – Utah Royals FC (6-6-7, 25 pts., NWSL 6th place) host the Washington Spirit, TOMORROW, Wednesday, August 8, as Head Coach Laura Harvey’s side – four points out of the 2018 NWSL Postseason with five games remaining – looks to seize upon the momentum from Sunday’s comeback win in Houston with back-to-back home contests this week critical to the club’s “Playoff Push.”
Washington (2-13-4, 10 pts., NWSL 8th) arrives for the second time this season at Rio Tinto Stadium, Royals FC winning 2-0 back on May 5. FW Kelley O’Hara got a goal in the first half, with FW Diana Matheson putting the game away in the 66th minute. GK Abby Smith also registered a clean sheet against the Spirit – helping the team clinch its first-ever win in club history.
Wednesday’s game is expected to feature the return of Utah’s international stars from the recent Tournament of Nations – Captain Becky Sauerbrunn (USA), FW Christen Press (USA), FW Amy Rodriguez (USA), and Katrina Gorry (Australia) – while Washington features USA MF Rose Lavelle, and 2017 NWSL Rookie of the Year Ashley Hatch.
Sunday, Utah Royals FC scored two goals six minutes apart for the club’s first-ever come-from-behind win, reversing an 0-1 halftime deficit with a Press equalizer and a Katie Stengel game-winner for a 2-1 victory. With the win, Utah now stands four points below the playoff line with five games remaining in its inaugural season, including three at home. Chasing Orlando, Portland, Chicago for one of the final two berths, Utah faces Seattle at home in Saturday’s NWSL Lifetime Game of the Week before traveling to Washington and New Jersey in late August, wrapping up the 2018 campaign at home against Chicago on Sat., Sept. 8.
