The Claret-and-Cobalt round out its congested three-match week with the highly-anticipated Western Conference showdown known as the Rocky Mountain Cup, facing off against rival Colorado Rapids; with a win, RSL takes the  first step in seeking its first outright fan-created Cup title since 2023.

Looking ahead to Saturday, Real Salt Lake will work to continue its momentum from the dominant second-half performance on Wednesday against Houston, scoring three goals in just under 20 minutes to earn another three points at home. In this edition of Storylines, we’ll take a look at the key pieces to RSL’s attack and the Club's long-standing history with rival Colorado Rapids.

Youth, Momentum, Home Fortress Fuel RSL

Real Salt Lake has rebuilt the walls of America First Field into a vaunted fortress, with the roar of the Riot booming for 12 consecutive sellouts, the atmosphere making life difficult for any visiting team. Head Coach Pablo Mastroeni and his squad have secured a 6-1-0 (W-L-T) record at home this season and a 14-4-2 record in the Utah side’s last 20 home games, dating back to June 1, 2025. The records lift RSL with momentum and confidence as it heads into this weekend’s storied Western Conference showdown.

After returning to the Wasatch Front this week after falling 3-1 in Dallas last Saturday, the Claret-and-Cobalt looked to bounce back at home, with mission accomplished Wednesday. After a deliberate first half, RSL came out with purpose in a much more energetic second stanza, scoring three goals within the first 20 minutes to take three points and earn its second clean sheet in the last three contests, after going 12 straight matches - since Colorado’s last visit, on October 4, 2025, incidentally - conceding at least one goal. For Captain and GK Rafael Cabral, the game carried extra significance, as it was the Brazilian national’s 52nd consecutive match since signing with RSL, having played every single minute across all competitions since joining the team in January, 2025.

The bright spot of the midweek matchup against Houston was undoubtedly 19-year-old Utah native Zavier Gozo, who scored his first career brace. The young star found the back of the net in the 57th and 64th minutes, putting an exclamation point on the night for the home side. By netting both goals with composure and precision, the West Valley-born and Eagle Mountain-raised attacker became the youngest player in RSL history to score multiple goals in a game; at 19 years, 52 days old, Gozo broke the previous record held by teammate Diego Luna, who scored twice in a home win over New York Red Bulls in July, 2023, at 19 years, 311 days old.

As Mastroeni’s squad prepares for its final match of the congested three-game week, key pieces will need to work as one to secure the victory and aspirations of reclaiming the Rocky Mountain Cup once again. With his two goals on Wednesday night, Gozo is now tied for RSL’s 2026 Golden Boot race with rookie FW Sergi Solans, both sitting at five goals, but Gozo’s four assists to Solans’ two securing the tiebreaker. Both Gozo and Solans bring striking power and speed to the pitch, with Solans bursting onto the MLS scene by scoring five goals in as many matches and showcasing his aerial abilities, netting three goals with his head, all against San Diego. The Oregon State/UCLA standout has been an attacking threat for RSL so far in 2026, using his speed to pressure opposing defenses and involving himself in multiple scoring opportunities, with two assists.

Along with Gozo and Solans, Luna is always integral in the squad's success, the 22-year-old USA World Cup hopeful already with four goals and three assists in 2026, bringing attacking creativity and flair and an unparalleled passion to the pitch. In order to emerge victorious on Saturday night, RSL will need to continue its strong form both defensively and in the attacking third, with not only an important three points in the West and Supporters' Shield, but the upper hand in the Rocky Mountain Cup on the line.

A Storied Rivalry is Rekindled on Saturday Night

While the matchup against Colorado carries importance in terms of the West and MLS Shield standings, it also carries immense history. The storied rivalry began with the inaugural match on April 16, 2005, where RSL secured a 1-0 victory on a late diving header by this week’s Apple analyst and former U.S. Olympic captain, Brian Dunseth. Over the 62-game history across all competitions, Real Salt Lake holds a pronounced 31-18-13 (W-L-T) record against the Rapids, outscoring its rival 97-65. The home fortress comes into play once again, as Colorado has historically struggled in Utah, with the Claret-and-Cobalt sitting at a 16-2-6 record since moving to Sandy in 2008.

The matchup carries added weight for RSL manager Mastroeni, who has a longstanding history with the rival side, having played and coached for Colorado. The Argentine-born midfielder played with the Rapids from 2002 to 2013, notching 225 appearances and five goals for the suburban Denver club. In 2010, Mastroeni captained the Rapids to its only MLS Cup title, beating Dallas 2-1 on an own goal in stoppage time to secure the title.

After retiring at the end of the 2013 season, the midfielder hung up his boots and joined Colorado’s coaching staff, being named interim head coach in January 2014, before earning the full-time position on March 8, 2014, just a week before the season began. Mastroeni coached the Rapids to the one seed in the West in 2016 - the Club’s best-ever regular season - before being fired months later. The former World Cup starter for the U.S. later spent one season as an assistant coach with the Houston Dynamo before finding himself in Utah in 2021. For RSL’s undeniable leader, the matchup brings excitement and added determination to come out on top.

All eyes will be on the bright lights of America First Field Saturday night as the Claret-and-Cobalt look to take down its Rocky Mountain rival and earn another three points at home, before hitting the road one last time ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup break on May 23 in Minnesota. With both pride and fan expectations on the line, this match is sure to be a heated battle with unprecedented intensity expected from the opening whistle to the final minutes.
