Real Salt Lake has teamed up with Altabank to create the “Saves for the Great Salt Lake'' initiative in part of the Club’s larger “Defenders of the Great Salt Lake'' initiative. For every save that a RSL goalkeeper makes this season, the Club and Altabank will donate $100 to the Save Our Great Salt Lake Coalition. The Coalition is a nonprofit organization convening scientists, farmers, decision-makers, community members, artists, organizations, and business leaders to work towards coordinated solutions for the Great Salt Lake.
“The Great Salt Lake is a vital resource for all of Utah,” Terry Grant, President of Altabank, said. “We are proud to team up with RSL to support this effort to restore the lake.”
So far this season, RSL Goalkeepers Zac MacMath and Gavin Beavers have combined for 24 saves, totalling in $2400 already donated to the Save Our Great Salt Lake Coalition. MacMath, Beavers, and RSL goalkeeper Tomas Gomez, along with members of the RSL backline visited the Great Salt Lake last week to learn more about the ongoing conservation efforts trying to help save the lake from various environmental and societal issues.
“I think it was really important for all of us to see what the Great Salt Lake really looks like,” MacMath said. “We fly over it all the time and getting to see it in person is really eye opening.”
The players met with different climate researchers, activists and scientists who explained the challenges the lake is facing and ways they themselves can help going forward such as using their platforms to promote change.
“I’m from Las Vegas so I didn’t know a whole lot about the Great Salt Lake,” Beavers said. “Learning a lot more today, and realizing how important of an ecosystem it is to Utah and all of our fans is so important. Save the Great Salt Lake!”
