Man of the Match: Forward Douglas Martínez made crafty movement on the ball all around the pitch and created a variety of chances. In addition to his 82.8% passing accuracy on the night, the forward recorded the match tying assist on a low-crossing ball into Aris Briggs in the second half. Martínez won five fouls while only conceding two and tracked back well defensively, recording two interceptions. His defensive work in the final moments helped RSL preserve the scoreline and earn the win. 


Telling Stat: Despite being outshot by the visitors, the Monarchs recorded 10 shots and managed to score three goals on its five shots on target. Comparatively, New Mexico United recorded six shots on target among 20 total shots, doubling up the home side’s attack. Goalkeeper Gavin Beavers withstood New Mexico’s attacking onslaught, making four saves in just his second-ever professional match. 


What You Missed: Forward Aris Briggs, the 61st overall selection in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft, made his first professional start for Head Coach Jamison Olave and the Real Monarchs. In the 54th minute, Briggs recorded his first professional goal to bring the Monarchs level in the match en route to the team’s second victory of the season. Real Salt Lake men Justin Portillo and Noah Powder scored the other two goals for the night, both from well outside the 18-yard-box. 


So What: With the win tonight, the Monarchs earned its third-consecutive result of the season. Seventh in the Mountain Division, the Monarchs are now just four points back from third place. Up next, the Real Monarchs will travel to Colorado Springs to take on Switchbacks FC at Weidner Field on Sunday, July 4 at 6:30 p.m. MT for the first meeting between the sides this season.
