Real Monarchs Visit San Antonio FC to Open 2021 USL Championship Season

HERRIMAN, Utah (Friday, May 7, 2021) – The Real Monarchs begin the 2021 United Soccer League Championship season on the road against San Antonio FC at Toyota Field on Saturday, May 8. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. MT and can be streamed live on ESPN+.

Head-to-Head: San Antonio FC has the advantage over the Monarchs with an all-time record of 5-2-1 in 8 matches played, including a 3-0-1 record at Toyota Field.
The previous match between the two sides was during the 2020 USL Championship season opener, the only game played for either side before the season was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic. San Antonio won the match 1-0 with the lone goal being scored in the 67th minute by Callum Montgomery.
Connections: San Antonio FC winger Sam Gleadle spent part of his youth career with Real Salt Lake in 2013. In addition, Gleadle was in the 18 for Reno 1868 FC in the 2018 USL Championship Western Conference Quarterfinals in a 1-0 win over a Monarchs squad that featured James Moberg. Gleadle went on to sign for MLS side Minnesota United in 2020 but was released ahead of the 2021 campaign before signing with San Antonio.
Notes: The Real Monarchs begin their seventh season in the USL Championship. San Antonio FC opened its season last week at Toyota Field with a 3-0 win over Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC that extended its home unbeaten streak to 14 matches. The Monarchs have been winless in San Antonio since 2016.
