2021 Positional Preview: Goalkeepers

In our final look at RSL’s roster to preview the 2021 season, we look at the goalkeepers.  With four players in the position, RSL has a variety of experience and strengths in its netminders.

Goalkeepers

Jeff Dewsnup (16) – RSL Homegrown and Herriman native has shown promise and will likely get time with the Monarchs in his first professional season.

Zac MacMath (29) – Now entering his 11th MLS season, MacMath has 195 career appearances and brings a wealth of experience to the locker room.

David Ochoa (20) – Made his MLS debut in 2020 and started for the U.S. in three matches during the Olympic Qualifying tournament.  The 2019 USL Championship title-winning goalkeeper has plenty of promise.

Andrew Putna (26) – Made 15 starts for RSL last season and now has six shutouts in 21 starts in his three MLS seasons.

Freddy Juarez’s take: “We have three very good goalkeepers and a very young goalkeeper.  I’m happy with all of them.  We think we have three legitimate starters in Ochoa, Zac and Putna.  They all have different strengths that can keep you in a game so we are very pleased.  They are going to be pushing one another and that’s going to help the group to get the best out of each other so when the opportunity comes, they are all ready.  Ochoa is very talented, young and up-and-coming with a high ceiling.  Zac has great experience.  He’s a great mentor and tactically he is very astute to the game.  Putna is a powerful, strong shot blocker and he can keep you in any match.  We love where we are at and have the luxury of having three very good goalkeepers.”
