RSL Falls 2-1 at Seattle Sounders FC

SEATTLE, Wash. (Wednesday, October 7, 2020) – Real Salt Lake (4-6-6, 18 points) fell 2-1 to Seattle Sounders FC on Wednesday night in the first match of three consecutive against Cascadia opposition.


Maikel Chang’s cross that forced an own goal was the club’s lone goal of the match.

After a strong spell of defense from RSL, Sounders FC struck first through Jordan Morris who slipped home his eighth goal of the season in the 28th minute. From the goal, RSL kept sustained possession and generated several opportunities from Tate Schmitt and Sam Johnson but neither were able to equalize as the teams entered the break with Seattle leading 1-0.


Seattle began the second half on the front foot, forcing Andrew Putna into a point-blank save to keep the scoreline at 1-0 in the 54thminute, but Seattle doubled its advantage in the 61st minute when Yeimar Gomez’s glancing header easily found the back of the net. In the 68th minute, RSL cut the lead in half when Chang’s cross deflected off of Nouhou Tolo and trickled into the back of the net.


RSL pressed to equalize late in the second half as Schmitt and Chang forced Seattle’s backline to stand firm as the match ended in favor of the hosts.


UP NEXT: Real Salt Lake will face Vancouver Whitecaps FC at Providence Park in Portland, Oregon on Saturday, October 10. Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. MT.

SEA: Jordan Morris (Cristian Roldan, Nicolas Lodeiro), 28th minute: Charging up the right flank in the attacking half, Lodeiro slipped Roldan into space who squared the ball to Morris inside the six-yard box where his right-footed effort found the bottom corner of the net.


SEA: Yeimar Gomez (Nicolas Lodeiro) 61st minute: Earning a freekick near the corner of the penalty area, Lodeiro swung in a freekick that that found the head of Gomez whose glancing header easily found the back of the net.


RSL: Own goal (Nouhou Tolo), 68th minute: Looking for the run of Douglas Martinez in the penalty area, Maikel Chang’s cross deflected off of Tolo before trickling into the back of the net.


NOTES:

- Forward Giuseppe Rossi, midfielder Everton Luiz and defender Nedum Onuoha were not medically cleared to play.


- Midfielder Albert Rusnak was away on international duty with Slovakia, scheduled to play in a 2020 UEFA Euro Qualifying Playoff against Ireland on Thursday, with UEFA Nations League matches against Scotland on October 11 and Israel on October 14.  He will have a 10-day quarantine upon his return.


- Kyle Beckerman is now four matches away from his 500th career MLS appearance.  He would be the first field player to reach that milestone in MLS history.  He is now also two matches away from his 350th career regular season appearance for RSL, appearing in 347 matches since his arrival in 2007.
