Flip the Switch: RSL vs. SKC

For each match in the MLS Is Back Tournament, we will take a look at three aspects of the game that Real Salt Lake will need to have flipped on to find success.

Embrace the challenge – When the match kicks off at 9 a.m. ET, it’s going to be hot and humid in central Florida.  The heat, humidity and early kick time are all challenges that RSL will have to overcome in the match.  Head Coach Freddy Juarez has emphasized throughout the trip that those obstacles are best faced head-on and he is approaching Wednesday morning’s match no differently.

Organized defense – RSL often defends in a 4-4-2 formation and SKC likes to attack through the middle.  If RSL’s central midfield pair of Kyle Beckerman and Everton Luiz can force Kansas City into wider positions, that sets RSL up for defensive advantages and opportunities to spring counter attacks.  Staying organized and compact will be essential in triggering those opportunities.

Beat the press – Kansas City plays the high press well and has for years under Peter Vermes.  If RSL can play quick balls behind the defense when faced with that press, it will create advantages in the attack.  In those instances, Corey Baird, Justin Meram and Sam Johnson will have chances to shine.

Tune it at 7:00 a.m. MT on ESPN as RSL takes on Sporting Kansas City and find out if RSL can Flip the Switch.
