Utah Royals FC Falls to Chicago Red Stars in Final Group Stage Match

SANDY, Utah – (Sunday, July 12, 2020) – Utah Royals FC (1-2-1, 4 points) fell 1-0 to Chicago Red Stars in the final match of the preliminary stage of the NWSL Challenge Cup presented by P&G and Secret. Casey Short broke the stalemate in the 85th minute with the eventual game-winner. 
Utah Royals will now have to await the results of tomorrow's matches to determine who it will play in the quarterfinal.

The two teams played to a scoreless first half with both teams having several chances at goal. In the 45th minute Chicago nearly found the back of the net when Morgan Gautrat received the ball unmarked at the top of the 18-yard-box, but goalkeeper Abby Smith came out with a massive kick-save to preserve the 0-0 scoreline heading into the half.
The second half once again saw several chances from both sides, but it was Chicago who found the back of the net in the 85th minute with a goal from Casey Short who headed home a cross from Savannah McCaskill.
UP NEXT: URFC will await the results from tomorrow’s matches to determine their seating for the quarterfinals that will take place on Friday, July 17 and Saturday July 18 at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman, Utah.
