GA Cup Recap: Day 3

New England Revolution U-15 (0) vs Inter Miami U-17 (3)

Inter Miami kicked off its final match of the GA Cup regional tournament strong with heavy possession in the New England half. The early pressure resulted in a freekick opportunity that would set the tone of the game after it bounced off the crossbar. Inter Miami’s Dairon Reyes rifled a low-shot through traffic just minutes later for the go-ahead goal in the 8th minute.

Inter remained in control throughout the match, adding its second goal in the 41st minute behind a strike from Andre Cardenas. To close out the scoring, Reyes hit the bottom of the bar from distance to place the ball neatly in goal to secure the 3-0 win over New England.

Inter Miami secured two points after topping New England on penalties after a 1-1 score line. The two balanced teams fought back and forth for possession, running the full length of the field without a strong opportunity either way. Near the half hour mark the game began to open as New England struck a quick turn in the box that was saved by Miami’s goalkeeper Mao Diaz. After Miami retaliated with a strike against the crossbar, the teams went into the break on a scoreless draw.

The second half opened up in the same way as the first however in the 65th minute New England broke the deadlock through London Timothy who converted a corner kick opportunity to give his side the lead. In stoppage time however, Miami’s Italo Addimandi responded with a quick shot in the penalty area to send the match to penalty kicks, which saw Miami take home the win.

Philadelphia Union (1 [2]) vs New York Red Bulls U-17 (1 [3])

Monday's U-17 matchup between Philadelphia Union and New York Red Bulls played out like a nail-biter with back and forth play until the very end. Regulation time saw two goals, one from each team, on either side of the half that resulted in penalty kicks to decide the victor. 

 Tapiwa Shumba got Red Bulls off to a promising start with his goal in the first half. The young forward dribbled his way to go, launching off a left-footed shot to take the lead into halftime. In the 64th minute it was Brandon Craig who found the equalizer for Philadelphia. After being awarded a free kick outside the 18-yard-box Craig curled the ball in with one shot. 

 At the end of regulation the two teams entered penalty shootout level at 1-1. Despite missing the first three kicks it was New York that rose victorious, outshooting the Union 3-2 in the shootout.

Philadelphia Union U-15 (1 [2]) vs New York Red Bulls U-15 (1 [3])

In a dramatic finish for the U-15s competition, Philadelphia Union and New York Red Bulls played to a draw with a goal apiece as New York Red Bulls took home the win in the resulting penalty shootout. The Red Bulls carried possession through most of the match, with both teams playing a heated battle through the length the field. New York held the better opportunities, resulting in a goal in the 20th minute.

Red Bulls continued its trend of holding controlling the game, searching for the goal to double its lead though it never came. Philadelphia Union instead found a hero in Frances Westfield when he curled a kick in during stoppage time to send the match into penalties. Ultimately, New York Red Bulls went on top secure the win and two points after the kicks.
