Real Salt Lake Selects Two in MLS SuperDraft

SANDY, Utah (Thursday, January 9, 2020) – Real Salt Lake selected two players in the 2020 Major League Soccer SuperDraft on Thursday, selecting forward Dayonn Harris with the 20th overall pick and defender Michael Wetungu with the 46th overall pick. Both players are expected join the club ahead of the beginning of the 2020 preseason on January 18 at the Zions Bank Real Academy.


“We are very excited to add two players that we had rated extremely highly on our draft board as two of the top prospects coming out of NCAA this year,” RSL General Manager Elliot Fall said. “Dayonn is a proven attacking threat on the wings who will add to our list of young promising attacking players.  Michael is a solid defender who we see translating to the professional level seamlessly.”


Harris played two full seasons at the University of Connecticut after taking a medical redshirt in his junior season in 2017.  He totaled seven goals and 16 assists in 39 matches for the Huskies, including nine assists during his senior season, ranking 10th in NCAA Division 1 in 2019.  Previously he played two seasons at Penn State, where he tallied four goals and two assists in 24 matches.

A native of Milton, Ontario, Canada, Harris has experience with the Canadian Youth National Teams, most recently playing with the U-20s in 2017.

Wetungu played four seasons at Michigan State University, scoring three goals in 72 appearances.  During his senior season, he had one goal in 14 matches, all as a starter.  A Rochester Hills, Michigan, native, he stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 198 pounds.

In addition, Real Salt Lake Academy product Tanner Dieterich was selected with the second pick in the second round (28
th
overall) by Nashville SC.  Dieterich played four seasons at Clemson University.
