Real Monarchs vs Portland Timbers 2 Quote Sheet

Real Monarchs 5-1 Portland Timbers 2

Zions Bank Stadium; Herriman, UT

September 14, 2019

Head Coach Jamison Olave

On the game:

“We’re feeling good about the 3 points. 8 games left to play, so we need to pick up every point at home. The players know that, and they showed that on the field today with the performance today. Having players from the first team is always going to help and make a difference, but I thought the Monarchs players that were on the field today did well too.”

On Douglas’ performance:

“Pretty happy for him. He has been playing well, all season long. That’s why he’s with the first team now. He had a chance to play with the first team. He scored 4 goals, and that shows how humble he is, so I’m very happy for him and excited for the team.”

On the defense:

“Confidence. Confidence is key, and the defenders know that their first job is to defend, to keep their goals at 0. We have been trying to concede fewer goals when we can, especially when we’re at home. We know that we are going to create great chances to score. Confidence came from the backline and we worked on that during the week, and it showed up in the game.”

On the quick turnaround:

“Take care of the body. Right now, we have to make sure that we take care of the bodies of those guys who are going to play in the quick turnaround against Tacoma. We can make the difference to climb higher in the standings, but we have to fight. After that we go to RGV, and we have to try and get something out of there. Then we come back, and hopefully we get three points here.”

Forward Douglas Martinez

On the game:

“I feel good, very happy. I am very happy that I could help my team, because that is the most important thing. I could not do it without my teammates, and as a team we played well. We have to keep playing well, playing like this, to keep moving up the table.”

On the attack:

“I think whenever we defend well, it is easier to attack well. All of the defenders kept their marks, and we defended together. I think that we played very well in both defense and offense, and when we do the game is easy. It helps us win when everything comes together.”

On the quick turnaround this week:

“We are professionals. We play on Tuesday, which is tough, but we will make sure that everyone is good to go. 3 games in one week is never easy, but we will work as hard as we can because every win and every game is important.”

Defender James Moberg

On the game:

“It was a great performance, a bounce back performance. We had a lot of injuries, and we came out healthy today and showed what we can do in this last stretch of the season.”

On the defense:

“All week we’ve been preaching defense, working on shifting over quicker and getting out to cross, being compact. We give that to the coaching staff. They’ve done a great job, putting us through a lot of good exercises through the week. As a team, we stepped up today and played well.”

On the quick turnaround:

“It’s going to take a lot of heart, a lot of grit. We just have to get through this week and get two good performances out. If we get 6 points when we come back, we’re going to be feeling really good about ourselves. It’s going to be a lot of heart, and just fire away for these next two games.”
