Johnson Joins Liberia for World Cup Qualifiers Against Sierra Leone

SANDY, Utah (Friday, August 30, 2019) – Real Salt Lake FW Sam Johnson has been called in to the Liberian National Team for upcoming World Cup Qualifiers against Sierra Leone.  He will depart following RSL’s match on Saturday against the Portland Timbers.


“Sam has been crucial to our success, especially over the last few months.  Playing with Liberia in World Cup Qualifiers is an incredible opportunity and we are thrilled for him,” RSL General Manager Craig Waibel said.


Johnson, 26, has nine goals in 20 appearances for RSL this season, his first with the club, and has scored in eight of his last 11 starts.  For Liberia, he has two goals in 14 career appearances since making his full international debut in 2015.


Liberia meets Sierra Leone in the First Round of qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.  Liberia will host the first leg of the aggregate-goal series on Wednesday, September 4, with the second leg falling on Sunday, September 8 in Sierra Leone.


Real Salt Lake is currently second in the Western Conference standings at 13-10-4 (43 points) and faces the Portland Timbers on Saturday at Providence Park.  Kickoff is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. MT with live coverage on KMYU, the KSL TV app and ESPN 700.
