Real Monarchs SLC 5-3 Rio Grande Valley FC Toros

Zions Bank Stadium; Herriman, Utah

Saturday, June 8, 2019

Real Monarchs SLC
Head Coach Martín Vasquez
On the win:

“This one feels good. I’m happy for the guys because it’s been a tough stretch of games. I told them that no one is going to give us anything, we have to earn it. I thought today we played one of our best first halves of the season. We created more than five chances to score. We could’ve score 6-7 goals in the first half. It’s a good feeling scoring those goals, but it’s not a good feeling giving up the goals that we did.”

On what worked:

“We have made individual mistakes. In the first half we were very good defensively. We didn’t give up many chances, maybe one. Defensively we started the season by getting results and winning games. We’ve had a bad stretch of games and today it was clear that if we play good defense, we’re going to get results to win us more games.”

On keeping the momentum:

“This gives us confidence going into the break. We’re going to prepare for Colorado and there’s still a lot of games to be played and when we watch the video, we’ll see that we had a good game. From there we’re going to make sure we close it down and make it harder for teams to score on us.”

On Douglas Martinez:

“We have players that are helping the team get results with goals and assists. Douglas and Maikel [Chang] are our two threats right now. Defensively Douglas puts the work in and today he did well. He’s getting rewarded for that and he’s been a presence in the box, and we’ll continue to use him.”

Defender Kalen Ryden
On the win:

“It feels good it really does. 5-3 kind of an ugly score line but at the end of the day we came out three points and that was our objective today. Regardless of if it was pretty, if it was quality, if it was clean, whatever our main goal tonight was to just win the game and we did that.”

On keeping the momentum for Colorado:

“Just a lot of focus and a lot of quality and training. I think we had a good week of training this week and we have a break. But we're on a high right now. This will be good because we're coming off a win. So just keeping the quality and training, keeping the confidence. And just believing in ourselves”

On difference in the defense between this game and other games:

“We've been on a four or five game streak where we haven’t won. We’ve really worked on training, just being sharp defensively and being tuned in defensively. We really worked on that all week and had a goal tonight with our back line doing what we needed to do. Three goals, it's tough to give up but we scored five, so it's a positive.”
