Real Monarchs Game at a Glance: SLC 1-5 NMU

Real Monarchs SLC 1 at New Mexico United 5

April 13, 2019; Albuquerque, New Mexico; Isotope Park

Real Monarchs SLC (2-2-2, 8 points); New Mexico United (3-0-4, 13 points)

Man of the Match: Midfielder Jack Blake found the Monarchs lone goal in the early goings of the match, putting the Utah side up early with a low shot from the center of the penalty area after a poor clearance from the New Mexico United defense. Blake's leadership and presence on the field also helped push the Monarchs in keeping the fight going as they sought out its second goal, that ultimately wasn’t meant to be.

Telling Stat: 59.1%. The USL Championship veterans held possession throughout most of the match, ending with 59.1% of the overall possession in the game. With 561 passes to keep the ball in Monarchs control, the Utah side used its possession to put 13 shots towards goal, four of which were on target and another four that were snuffed out. These stats combined tell the story of the Monarchs fighting spirit as the team refused to bow out of the match throughout the night.

What You Missed: Real Monarchs SLC fell to the 2019 expansion side New Mexico United in its first visit to Isotopes Park. Blake found the back of the net early in the first half, but the forward attack of New Mexico United earned a strong display in the first half that ultimately lead to Real Monarchs dropping the three points on the road. RSL men Tate Schmitt and Pablo Ruiz both made appearances on the Starting XI for the Monarchs with Schmitt playing for the full 90 minutes.

So What: The Real Monarchs road skid continues, as the Utah team has yet to earn the full three points away from home in the 2019 season. The loss in New Mexico drops the Monarchs to 9th on the Western Conference table, holding on to the eight points it has earned so far this season. Still above the playoff line in the early goings of the season, however, Real Monarchs will now turn its attention to next week when it returns home to play host to San Antonio FC. The evening match will be played at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman where kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. MT.
