Real Monarchs SLC Rolls Past Reno 1868 FC 3-1

HERRIMAN, Utah (Saturday, April 6, 2019) – Real Monarchs SLC (2-1-2, 8 points) claimed its second consecutive home victory on Saturday afternoon, topping Reno1868 FC 3-1. FW Joao Plata and MFs Maikel Chang and Jack Blake each found the back of the net in the win.
The Monarchs started the match with a powerful display as GK David Ochoa made his mark on the match right away, saving Corey Herzog’s penalty with ease, setting up the momentum for the Monarchs to attack just minutes later through Chang, who drove home the first goal to the far post. The Monarchs attack continued its push early on as some quick and creative passing within the attacking third set Plata up to fly one into the left corner and double the Monarchs lead. Ochoa closed out the first half with a fingertip save to keep the Monarchs up by two going into the break.
The Monarchs opened up the second with the same fire that dominated the first, as Blake slipped the third goal in past Reno goalkeeper James Marcinkowski. In the dying moments, 1868 FC shifted gears, pulling one back through a volley from Aiden Apodaca, but it was not enough to stop the Monarchs, as the home side walked away with the three points. Additionally, FW Kyle Coffee entered in the second half of play, making his professional debut.
UP NEXT: Real Monarchs takes its first trip down to Isotope Park in Albuquerque to play its first match in the newly created Four Corners Cup against expansion side New Mexico United. The matchup is set for 7:30 p.m. MT on Saturday, April 13.

SLC: Joao Plata (Douglas Martinez), 15th minute – Quick and creative passing in the attacking third found the ball hitting between Chang, Martinez, and Plata before ending with Plata at the top of the box. Plata perfectly cast it into the top left corner the net just outside to double the lead early.
SLC: Jack Blake (Douglas Martinez), 48th minute – Blake started off the second half with the momentum the Monarchs held in the first, pairing with Douglas Martinez. KEY SAVES AND DEFENSIVE STOPS
SLC: David Ochoa, 3rd minute: A light shove in the box gifted Reno a penalty within the early minutes of the match, Reno’s Corey Herzog stepped up to the spot and attempted to put Reno on the board early, but Ochoa made the penalty save look easy, denying the early goal.
SLC: David Ochoa, 45th minute: Siad Haji took advantage of a gap in the Monarchs defense to fly a low shot towards the far post. David Ochoa came up big once again, reaching to get a fingertip save on the ball and keep the clean sheet going into the half.
