The U.S. and Canadian Women’s National Teams both defeated opponents at International Friendlies today. URFC stars Becky Sauerbrunn and Christen Press represented team USA in its second match of the 2019 season, while Desiree Scott featured for Canada in its first match of 2019 against Norway.
After coming off a 3-1 loss against France on Saturday, the USWNT played for the first time in and against Spain. Sauerbrunn started on the backline for team USA and Press checked into the match at the start of the second half.
The first half was scoreless, but Press came off the bench and scored in the 53rd minute springing away on a counterattack and directed shot to the far post. Spain continued high pressure throughout the remainder of the match, but the U.S. defended a clean sheet and clinched a 1-0 victory.

The Canadian team opened up its 2019 season with a 1-0 defeat over Norway, also a competitor in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Desiree Scott started in the midfield and Canada opened the match with opportunities in the first half, however the match was scoreless at the break.
After early substitutions in the second half, Christine Sinclair scored from a cross in the 66th minute. Norway was not able to respond and Canada came out on top 1-0.
Next up, the USWNT will play in the SheBelieves Cup and Canada will play in the Algarve Cup in March, before both teams compete in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
