Last week, the RSL Foundation visited Bennion Elementary School for a holiday surprise. This holiday tradition began three years ago, after the foundation partnered with RSL season ticket holder, Rob Cochran.
Two months before the celebration, children received a list of gifts to choose from. At the time, the children did not know what the list was for. Various corporations assisted by donating specific gifts the children requested.
Students were whisked away to a private screening of the Polar Express. While the students were away, faculty and volunteers decorated the entire school with holiday decor. The halls were filled with Christmas trees, wreaths, and twinkling lights. However, the main production occurred in the gym. More flashy Christmas lights, sleigh bells, and tables stacked with gifts surrounded the gym.
When the students returned, jingle bells were handed to them as they walked into the gym for an assembly. Executive Director of the RSL Foundation, Mary Van Minde, started the assembly by presenting RSL jerseys to Principal Cordova, RSL fan Rob Cochran, along with his sons Canyon and Crew.
Then, Utah Royals FC goalkeeper Abby Smith, surprised the crowd with a bag of soccer balls for the school.
“I feel very fortunate to participate in this opportunity and continue to be involved throughout the Utah community, especially during the holidays,” said Smith.
Little did the students know, Smith, brought a friend with her. She revealed Nick Rimando was in the building. The students cheered and Saint Nick walked out with a bag of balls and mini goals in hand.
There was one last surprise in store. While the kids sang “Must Be Santa” and rang their bells, holiday cheer spread, and Santa appeared. The assembly concluded with more Christmas carols and the RSL family left Bennion Elementary filled with joy.
“Now I am in the holiday spirit,” said Rimando.
