SANDY, Utah — (Thursday, Dec. 13, 2018) Western Governors University (WGU) and Real Salt Lake (RSL) teamed up to grant scholarships worth a year’s tuition to four local students this year. Recipients Tyler Jones, Tanner Browning, Jenna Elegante and Kristy Quintana were awarded the scholarships by WGU President Chief of Staff Gilbert Rojas during halftime of Real Salt Lake’s match against the Montreal Impact on August 11 at Rio Tinto Stadium.
“RSL is proud to join WGU to offer these students free tuition for one year and give them an opportunity to be reborn through education,” said RSL Owner Dell Loy Hansen. “This university enhances the quality of our state and the nation – in that way, it’s more than just a college.”
Each of the winners are currently enrolled at WGU and submitted an official entry form earlier in the year. Jones is pursuing his bachelor’s degree in business management, Browning is finishing his bachelor’s degree in nursing, Elegante is working towards her bachelor’s degree in data management and data analytics, and Quintana is earning her master’s degree in elementary education.
The majority of WGU students are working adults who benefit from the online university’s flexibility and competency-based online degree programs, which allow students to complete courses on their schedule, advancing as soon as they are able to demonstrate mastery of the material. Combined with affordable tuition of $6,500 a year for undergraduate students and $7,600 for graduate students, this is making it possible for more students to earn degrees that are helping them advance their careers. More than 7,600 Utahns are currently enrolled at WGU, part of a growing nationwide student body of more than 109,000.
Online, accredited, and nonprofit, WGU offers more than 60 bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business, K–12 teacher education, information technology, and health professions, including nursing.
Established in 1997 by 19 U.S. governors with a mission to expand access to high-quality, affordable higher education, online, nonprofit WGU now serves more than 109,000 students nationwide and has more than 124,000 graduates in all 50 states. Driving innovation as the nation’s leading competency-based university, WGU has been recognized by the White House, state leaders, employers, and students as a model that works in postsecondary education. In just 21 years, the university has become a leading influence in changing the lives of individuals and families, and preparing the workforce needed in today’s rapidly evolving economy. WGU is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, has been named one of Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies, and was featured on NPR, NBC Nightly News, CNN, and in The New York Times.
