GA Cup Recap: Day 1

Colorado Rapids U-17 1-2 LA Galaxy U-17

In the opening match for the U-17 group of the 2018 Generation Adidas Cup Fall Regional, LA Galaxy took the win from Colorado Rapids in a hard-fought bout that ended with a 2-1 scoreline. The early stages of the match saw an intense back and forth affair as neither side could find the advantage against each other’s defensive lines. The Galaxy found the lead after Carson Klein was brought down in the penalty area and Cameron Dunbar calmly converted the penalty, taking the Galaxy into the second half with a 1-0 lead.

LA Galaxy doubled its lead early in the second half as Klein took advantage of Colorado ‘keeper Abraham Rodriguez coming far off his line and comfortably floating the ball from distance into the net. The match turned heated as the Colorado side took the fight to the Galaxy, finding its first goal through Jason Robles after he neatly dribbled through high pressure. Through the dying moments of the match Colorado dramatically fought to find the late equalizer but it was not meant to be.

San Jose Earthquakes U-15 2-1 Vancouver Whitecaps U-15

In both teams’ first game of the 2018 Generation Adidas Cup Fall Regional, San Jose Earthquakes U-15s did just enough to defeat Vancouver Whitecaps counterparts 2-1 on Friday afternoon. San Jose took control of the game early in first half when forward Ashton Escamilla found the back of the net with a well-placed shot.  Just minutes later, after San Jose combined to split the Vancouver defense, Escamilla secured his brace by tucking away a rebound off of the opposing keeper. Vancouver fought its way back into the game in the 25th minute when Rohin Kapila scored with a powerful strike from outside the box.

The second half began much like the first with San Jose controlling most of the possession and creating the most chances.  However, as the half wore on, Vancouver became more and more competitive as they pushed on for the equalizer.  In the end, both teams created a number of chances, but neither was able to capitalize as the game ended 2-1.

Seattle Sounders FC U-17 1 (5) - 1 (3) Portland Timbers U-17

The U-17s of the Cascadia rivalry brought the heated rivalry Generation adidas Fall Regional to the wire as the game ended in a penalty shootout with Sounders FC taking the win, 5-3 in the shootout. The Sounders dominated the first half of the game controlling possession and finding the opening goal after Bryson Hankins found himself with time and space, calmly tucking away the goal in the far corner. Portland Timbers were not discouraged however, taking advantage of a poor pass in the midfield to run the ball down to the penalty area where the attack ended with a kick from the spot, which Gerardo Duran coolly converted.

The two teams went into the second half level with a goal apiece and Portland came out swinging, dominating most of the second half and putting Seattle ‘keeper James Lowell to the test. The Sounders responded in kind, putting the Timbers backline to work but ultimately full time saw the game level and went to a penalty shootout. The Sounders put away all five of its chances, while Portland’s Owen Guske missed his opportunity. The two traded conversions until Daniel Leyva put away the last kick needed for Seattle to come away with the win.

Colorado Rapids U-15 5 - 0 Portland Timbers U-15

A dominating Colorado Rapids U-15 team took charge on the field as it walked away with the 5-0 victory over its Portland Timbers counterpart on Friday afternoon. The Rapids commanded the field from the offset, putting pressure down early on the Timbers defense. The pressure paid off as the Rapids grab an early opening goal through Joaquin Torres off some fast passing, then closed the first half with a shot from Darren Yapi which skipped into the back of the net under Timbers goalkeeper Beckham Sunderland.

The second half saw the same high energy pressure from Colorado Rapids, where the majority of the half was spent trapped in the Portland defensive third. The Rapids quickly extended their lead as Yapi used his height advantage to send in a headed effort after a massive save from Sunderland deflected for a Rapids corner. Yapi earned his hat trick soon after, linking up a passing play with Luke Robinson who sent it immediately back to Yapi. Yapi used his time off the ball to get in behind the line and against the keeper to cleanly put the ball way. Colorado’s Alan Salgado put the nail in the coffin as the Colorado attack left the Portland defense spinning within the 18-yard line, using the confusion to slip away the fifth and final goal of the game.

Los Angeles Galaxy U-15 0(1)-0(4) Seattle Sounders U-15

Seattle Sounders U-15 defeated LA Galaxy U-15 in a penalty shootout in its 2018 Generation Adidas Cup Fall Regional opener on Friday afternoon. LA kicked off the game with purpose and drove right at Seattle’s defense repeatedly early on. Seattle began to have more possession of the ball as the half progressed, but LA remained dangerous on the counter attack. The half ended scoreless, with neither team having troubled each goalkeeper to any extent.

After the break, Seattle came out the more dangerous and energetic team. The Sounders controlled possession and kept LA pinned back in its own half. LA managed to break out on occasion, but their best chances went wide of the Seattle goal. After regulation ended without any goals, the game went to penalty kicks. A perfect start ensued for Seattle as clever goal from Reed Baker-Whiting and a powerful save from goalkeeper Cole Kulhanek helped usher the Cascadia club to a convincing shootout victory over LA Galaxy.
