REAL MONARCHS SLC SUFFERS 2-5 DEFEAT AT ORANGE COUNTY SC
Monarchs Miss Chance at Playoff Berth; Quick Turnaround Sees Club Visit LA Galaxy II on Saturday

IRVINE, Calif (Wednesday, September 19, 2018)Real Monarchs SLC (17-10-3, 54 points, 3 West) fell victim to a second half scoring onslaught, ultimately falling 2-5 at Orange County SC on Wednesday night. The loss sees the Monarchs miss a chance to clinch a playoff spot with four matches remaining in the season.


The match started well in the Monarchs favor as DF Kalen Ryden scored his fifth goal of the year just eight minutes into the match from a MF Justin Portillo cross. The early advantage caused the hosts to open up its own attack to go in search of an equalizer. Orange County found the equalizer in the 36th minute when Aodhan Quinn slammed home a first-time effort from close range. Just two minutes later, OC found the go-ahead goal when a misplayed ball out of the back from GK Jake Leeker found Noah Powder near midfield who collected the ball before looping a long-distance shot over Leeker and into the back of the net.


The second half saw the Monarchs give up three consecutive goals after Portillo leveled the match at two apiece when his low rocket skipped into the net from distance. An onslaught of goals from Orange County ensued as the hosts fired back in front in the 78th minute when Christian Duke buried his shot from inside the area. Just two minutes later, OC earned a penalty kick that Aodhan Quinn converted past the outstretched arm of Leeker. The final tally for OC came in the 85th minute when Thomas Enevoldsen skipped through the Monarchs defense.


UP NEXT: The Monarchs will now take the short trip from Irvine to Los Angeles to face LA Galaxy II on Saturday, September 22 at 8:30 p.m. MT.


GOAL SCORING RUNDOWN:

SLC: Kalen Ryden (Justin Portillo), 8th minute: A corner kick taken by Justin Portillo found a player short inside the area who played back to Portillo. Portillo looped the cross into the back post where a waiting Ryden found space from his man and easily headed home the game’s opening goal.


OC: Aodhan Quinn (Noah Powder), 36th minute: Finding space to streak down the right side, Powder latched onto the ball before picking his head up to find Quinn streaking into the penalty area. Quinn slammed home the low cross to bring the score level.


OC: Noah Powder, 38th minute: A misplayed ball out of the back from Monarchs goalkeeper Jake Leeker found the feet of Powder near midfield. Powder collected the ball before playing a looped a long-distance shot over Leeker and into the back of the net.


SLC: Justin Portillo (Charlie Adams) 63rd minute: Collecting the ball 40 yards from goal, Portillo took a touch forward with space for a shot. Portillo unleashed a low drive that clipped the post on its way into the back of the net.


OC: Christian Duke (Koji Hashimoto) 77th minute: Fielding a pass near the top of the penalty area from Hashimoto, Duke took a touch before curling a shot into the far bottom corner.


OC: Aodhan Quinn (Penalty) 80th minute: OC midfielder Koji Hashimoto was judged to have been brought down inside the area to draw the penalty. Quinn dispatched the spot kick, going low to the bottom right corner.


OC: Thomas Enevoldsen (Kevin Alston) 88th minute: Enevoldsen skipped through the Monarchs defense and wrongfooted the defenders, easily slotting home the game’s final goal.


NOTES:

- The Monarchs winless run on the road now reaches seven consecutive matches.


- Five goals is the most the Monarchs have conceded in a single match this season.


- The Monarchs can now clinch a spot in the playoffs with a single point on Saturday, or San Antonio dropping a point in its next match.
